From Google searches I see that this is apparently a common issue with Vista ...Does anyone know how to fix it? I finally solved the problem. Follow these troubleshooting steps if Windows doesn't show a connected drive. I used a shorter USB cable and there was the drive! My IOMEGA external hard drive does swith the light on and is working because I can feel it vibrating a little and heats the normal way as if it were working Go to device manager then use the update driver option then search for the usbstor.sys file. I tried every thing here but nothing worked.

there has to be something about how windows 7 mounts drives and remembers drive letters maybe the first service pack will address this issue. I wanted to copy stuff from the old 'puter hard dive so I used an external drive patch cord.
The flash drive shows up in Disk Manager but doesn't have a drive letter assignment and you can't assign one (it's usually detected as "Drive 0"). Haven't tried it yet but it may also be possible to include the external drive as a device added to a network or homegroup. what can I do..mine is a Seagate Iomega Prestige 500GB external drive.. Intel D975XBX2 board, core 2 duo, 4gb ram, Vista Ultimate.
