So the solution (at least for FS9) appears to be to install the no-CD patch. When you installed an add-on aircraft (A WestWind CRJ-200LR), the installer for that aircraft overwrote the FS2004 UNINSTAL.EXE with an UNINSTAL.EXE for that aircraft.The FS2004 UNINSTAL.EXE I have is 4.15 MB What is even better about doing it this way is that I don't have to worry about the #4 CD being in the drive to make the game work. I uninstalled it using the uninstalled option.

As the installation on the PMDG MD11 did not detect the fs9.1, i decided to uninstall the update. But I ran CCRegistry Clean before I did that. You may have to register before you can post: click the register link above to proceed. This made the game work under its original CD programing.
I immediately tried to run it and it loaded up with no problems and took me to my favorite airport. It also helps in keeping your computer clean and secure, so don't uninstall after that. One lesson I learned was to have an entirely separate physical drive which I use only for FS, and I keep copies of all the addons on a different drive.
Rename your current fs9.exe file (in your main FS2004 folder) to fs9.exe.origb. HTH. Both utilities are freeware and will work perfectly on XP. I would have thought to do it myself if I had may brain in gear. I played around with about every variable I could find. But I created a new folder and named it FS9 and installed Flight Simulator 2004 into that folder.
