BTW, I have 2 gmail accounts configured in Mac Mail, only one of them had this issue. Remember that you had an account selected when you opened the SMTP editing dialog. I think the issue is that it's not properly saving the usernames, at least that's what I found. I have been having the same issue for 6 months and was unable to fix it despite trying all of things that I had read. Basically, you skipped the authentication step when setting up the outgoing emails, so you're sending an email that connects to a server with no credentials, hence the "unable to send" message.

I had this problem and your answer got me in the right direction.I have three Gmail accounts and somehow one of them had 2 keychain entries. E.g. In Mail.app: 1) Mail menu | Preferences.2) Select problematic account in list on left. 3) Select "Edit SMTP Server List..." from Outgoing Mail Server drop-down. 4) Fix username by appending domain If you are able to receive messages BUT NOT SEND (GMail, Hotmail, Live, etc), the answer is simple :) Click Mail > Preferences > Accounts (select yours) > (select) Account Information
