As I have not yet checked the XML plist for corruption, that could be a possible cause as well. I couldn't restore a single Mavericks until I deleted Yosemite backups even though I didn't want to restore those. Of course if the problem is happening with all of the accounts, then you'd want to make that change for all of the accounts that are effected with failing SMTP responses.
