Please try again. The problem was that when adding a new server in mac mail you can make a mistake very easily. I decided (before the NSA) that I really did not want my mail left on a server, so I kept my old-fashioned POP account.

In order to check the outgoing server's credentials go to Mail menu > Preferences > Accounts > find your Gmail account. So you basically have to enter the outgoing server name twice under description and server name. Basically, you skipped the authentication step when setting up the outgoing emails, so you're sending an email that connects to a server with no credentials, hence the "unable to send" message.
Worked for me instantly.
